RAPID CITY - More than 60 players competed in 13 classifications at the Rapid City Open tennis tournament this weekend. The tournament is a part of the United States Tennis Association in the Northern Sectional for players age 18 and under. The championship round finished on Sunday at Sioux Park tennis courts in Rapid City.

Rapid City's Cassie Malik won the championship in the 16-year old girls division, 7-5, 3-6 (8) over Kelly Feehan, also of Rapid City.

"Overall it was a good tournament," Malik said. "I thought my backhand was the strongest part of my game and helped me through the rounds. It feels really good to win, even though I was playing against one of my really good friends. In this tournament a lot of players end up playing against friends."

Elliot Czarnecki and Anthony Rauschenbach, both of Sioux Falls, were also two good friends who faced off against each other in the finals. Czarnecki topped Rauschenbach, 6-2, 6-2, in the final.

"It's always good to come up here," said Czarnecki, "Anthony and I are good friends. We hit together back home, so it is kind of an old rivalry. It's always good to win though. I kept in there during some tough points in the match."

Czarnecki's brother, Benjamin, also won the championship in his division, 6-2, 6-2, over Rapid City's James Ferrier.

In other singles action, Piedmont's Megan McDougall was victorious in the girls 18-year-old division defeating Morgan Paluch, of Rapid City, 6-1, 6-0. It was McDougall's last match before moving on to play NCAA Division I tennis at South Dakota State University.
