McMartin has career night in win
RAPID CITY - Sioux Falls Washington's Quintin McMartin had a career night in the first half Friday night and that was all the Warriors would need to defeat Rapid City Stevens, 33-6, in a Greater Dakota Conference football game at O'Harra Stadium.
McMartin, a 6-foot-3, 217-pound tight end, caught five balls for 185 yards and four touchdowns as Washington took a 27-0 lead into the half on a cold, wet night that was anything but conducive to catching footballs. He ended the game with six catches for 205 yards as quarterback Brett Grevlos went 11-for-15 for 252 yards and threw all four scores.
"I've never even had four touchdown catches in a game before," the senior said. "They were playing man (to man coverage) on everybody and the guy that was guarding me was about (5-foot-4)."
McMartin caught two scoring strikes in the first quarter of 38 and 5 yards, and two more of 48 and 70 yards in the second quarter to effectively end the game. Stevens head coach Paul Ferdinand sounded like he would have been surprised to hear that McMartin thought anyone was covering him on his touchdown catches.
"The first two touchdowns we didn't even cover the guy," Ferdinand said. "It's a pretty easy game when you're wide open."
The No. 3-ranked Warriors (6-1 overall and 4-1 in the GDC) didn't do all their damage through the air as running back Sam Hoskins carried the ball 13 times for 162 yards and a score on a 50-yard romp in the fourth quarter.
"I thought we did a good job of getting off the bus after a long ride over here and coming out ready to play early," McMartin said. "That's something we need to keep doing."
The Raiders played the Warriors fairly evenly in the second half as they kept the ball away from Washington for most of the final 24 minutes. Back-up quarterback Hayden Hast came in for the Raiders in the second half and completed 4-of-6 passes to lead Stevens on its only scoring drive of the night.
The Raiders got a 3-yard run from Taylor Muhlbeier to cap off a 21-play, 70-yard drive that took more than 11 minutes off the clock. The Raiders converted two 4th downs on the drive, the second when Washington jumped offside on 4th and 1.
"I thought we played pretty well in the second half," Ferdinand said. "It always helps to move the ball when you get a couple of penalties. The boys didn't give up and played hard all the way through. We just need to keep playing hard on every down. We need to start turning those drives where we get a couple of first downs into drives where we punch it in for touchdowns."
The Raiders dropped to 1-6 overall and 1-4 in the GDC. Stevens hits the road to take on Sioux Falls Lincoln next week while Washington will host Spearfish.
