BROOKINGS - Jennifer Warkenthien posted her seventh double-double of the season, pacing 23rd-ranked South Dakota State with 21 points and 11 rebounds as the Jackrabbits defeated Western Illinois, 81-47, Monday night at Frost Arena.
SDSU improved to 16-2 overall, 5-1 in The Summit League.
The victory all but assured the Jackrabbits of their 23rd consecutive winning season as they maintained a share of the Summit League lead with Oakland (Mich.) and North Dakota State.
Western Illinois dropped to 4-12 overall, 2-3 in league play. The Jackrabbits took control of the game following the first media timeout. After WIU gained its lone lead of the night, 8-6, on two Katie Horsman free throws with 15:19 remaining in the first half, SDSU responded with an 18-2 run.
Five different players scored in the spurt, which was highlighted by three pointers from Ketty Warkenthien, Warkenthien and Stacie Oistad.
SDSU led 35-19 at the half and continued to build on its lead throughout the second half. The Jackrabbits led by as many as 39 points in the closing minutes.
Warkenthien, who matched her season-high of 21 points, was one of four Jackrabbit starters in double figures. Oistad also equaled her season high with 14 points, while Cornemann tallied 13 and Jill Young added 12 points.
Young was 3-of-5 from three-point range as SDSU finished the game 8-of-23 as a team from behind the arc.
The Jackrabbits shot a season-best 50.8 percent, making 33-of-65 from the field. SDSU shot 60 percent from the floor in the second half, 18-of-30.
At the line, SDSU was only 7-of-13, 53.8 percent.
Rebounding and turnovers also played key factors as the Jackrabbits held a 39-27 advantage on the boards, including 14 on the offensive glass.
The Westerwinds' 22 turnovers led to 27 Jackrabbit points, while SDSU committed only 12 miscues.
Western Illinois finished the night 19-of-49 from the field, 38.8 percent, including 2-of-6 from three-point range. The Westerwinds were a perfect 7-for-7 at the free throw line.
Katy Clark was the lone player in double figures for WIU with 10 points.
