PIERRE - In a game that saw 25 hits, and one 12-run inning, Spearfish Post 164 outslugged Post 320, 10-7, in the second game of the South Dakota 3A Regional Tournament at Hyde Field Wednesday afternoon.

Post 320 took a 7-1 lead after scoring five run in the top of the fourth. But Spearfish quickly responded, exploding for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to take an 8-7 lead.

Spearfish would not trail again.

"Our whole lineup contributed today," said Spearfish head coach Matt Kemp, "They don't give up, even when we were down. They know that with the firepower we have in our lineup they're never out of the game."

After Spearfish scored in the first inning on a Jess Cooper RBI single, Post 320 took back the lead scoring two in the next frame. When Post 320 scored five in the fourth, making the score 7-1, it seemed that they had all the momentum.

But Spearfish had seven hits to start the fourth, with every player in the lineup reaching base in the seven-run outburst.

Spearfish was led offensively by Jess Cooper, who had two hits and three RBI, and Justin Kemp, who had three hits.

Kemp also pitched in relief for Spearfish after Post 320's big inning. He pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings at one point retiring 10 straight 320 hitters.

"Justin came through in a tough spot when 320's lineup was clicking, and we needed someone to shut them down. Post 320 has great hitters, so I'm very happy with the job he did."

The game was over when …

Spearfish added two insurance runs in the seventh after Cody Rosenau hit a sacrifice fly, and Kemp lined an RBI double to right field, giving Spearfish a 10-7 lead.

Wednesday's MVP …

Kemp went 3-for-5 at the plate and earned the win on the mound throwing 5 1/3 scoreless innings.

On Deck …

Spearfish stays in the winners bracket and will face Post 22 at noon Thursday.
