SPEARFISH - Black Hills State moved one step closer to achieving two of its team goals, sweeping Dakota State, 25-18, 25-19, 25-16, in a Dakota Athletic Conference volleyball match on Friday at the Young Center.

"Every match we play in is for a goal," said BHSU coach Jhett Albers. "Our goal is 20 wins and the Dakota Athletic Conference title."

BHSU improved to 11-1 in the DAC and 19-6 overall. The Lady Yellow Jackets and Jamestown shared the top rung atop the conference standings, heading into this weekend's matches. The Jimmies topped Dickinson State on Friday to remain tied with BHSU for the league lead.

'I like how we responded after the loss to Jamestown," said Albers. The Jimmies handed BHSU its first DAC loss of the season last Saturday.

"Dakota State is an improved team. We did a nice job at the net and blocked well," Albers said.

Kristin Engle collected six assisted and two solo blocks for the Green and Gold. Maggie O'Neill delivered two solo and two assisted blocks each. O'Neill and Engle led the Lady Jackets with 14 and 12 attack kills and each served an ace. Mandy Brumfield provided 62 set assists.

Dakota State lists only one senior and two juniors on its roster.

"We definitely are a young team," said Lady T's coach Cynthia Henning. "I knew tonight was going to be a tough match for us. At times we played well. At other times, Black Hills State did whatever it wanted to. I didn't think we passed the ball very well.

Melissa Boddy served very well." Amy Pheneger served one ace for DSU.

Stephanie Kruggel led the Lady T's with 19 set assists. Rachael Jensen and Margie Anthony claimed nine and six kills, respectively. Lauren Kregel led the team with 14 digs. Anthony added three assisted blocks. Kruggel chipped in one solo and one assisted block.

BHSU hosts Mayville State at 3 p.m. today, while Dakota State, 4-8 in the DAC and 7-19 overall, visits South Dakota Mines at 3 p.m. today.

Mayville State 3, South Dakota Mines 2: South Dakota School of Mines won the first two sets, 25-18 and 25-23, but Mayville State came to life and claimed three straight sets 25-20, 25-17 and 27-19 to record a Dakota Athletic Conference volleyball win on Friday at Goodell Gymnasium.

Three players finished with double-figure kills for the Hardrockers. Ashley Kauffman led the attackers with 19 kills. Katherine Hanson had 16 kills and Amanda Cammack had 10.

Kauffman and Cammack led the team with three block assists apiece.

Reanna Roberson and Becky Keilholtz split the setting duties for the home team. Keilholtz had 37 assists and Roberson had 25.

Jenny Hiykel led the Mines' defense with 46 digs. Katherine Hanson had 22.

For the Comets, Alyssa Clancy led the attack at the net with 24 kills. Betsy Winkler made 62 set assists and had 17 digs.

Ashley Nelson led the defense with 27 digs. Winkler and Brittney Lindgren each had 17 digs.

Earlier this season, Mayville (15-8 overall, 7-5 DAC) recorded a 3-0 win over Mines on Oct. 4.

Mines falls to 12-13 overall and 4-8 in the DAC. The Hardrockers host Dakota State at 3 p.m. today in Dakota Athletic Conference action.
