The seventh annual South Dakota high school state cheer and dance competition will be held today and Saturday at Rapid City Stevens High School.
According to a release from the state high school athletic association, the Class A competition is today with opening ceremonies beginning at 5 p.m. The Class AA competition begins at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Class A has 18 schools entered in the competitive cheer competition with nine in the competitive dance competition. Seventeen schools will compete in Class AA competitive dance, with 16 set to compete in AA competitive cheer.
Competitive cheer is divided into two categories: stunting/tumbling and stunting/non-tumbling. Competitive dance will have four categories: hip hop, jazz, kick and pom. There will be a large and small group competition in each division in Class A only. Each school may enter one team per division.
Last year’s overall champions in the Cheer Competition were Sioux Falls O’Gorman in Class AA, Sioux Valley in Class A and Dell Rapids St. Mary in Class B.
Starting with the 2013-14 school year, competitive cheer will have only two classes (Class AA and Class A) as in competitive dance. The 2012 champions for the dance competition were Sioux Falls Washington in Class AA and Dakota Valley in Class A.
The state meet will be a two-session tournament with adult tickets at $10 and student tickets at $6 for each session. More information about the competition can be found on the South Dakota High School Activities Association website www.sdhsaa.com.
