Rapid City American Legion Post 22 exploded for 29 total runs in a doubleheader sweep of Pierre Post 8 Monday, winning 8-4 in extra innings and 21-4.
Behind the offense of Jack Sorensen, who went 6-9 over the two games with 8 RBI, Post 22 improved to 14-2 on the season.
In the first game, the heavily favored Hardhats ran into some early trouble. Post 8 scored two runs in the bottom of the first. Post 22 would respond with a run in the top of the second and two in the third. Post 8 came back with two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-3 lead.
"I felt like our intensity wasn't there in the first game, we weren't very intentional at the plate," Post 22 coach Mitch Messer said. "We ended up coming up with the hits when we needed them."
Those hits started coming in the top of the seventh, when a wild pitch scored the tying run for Post 22, and the game went to extra innings.
The top of the eighth saw Post 22 score four runs, and Kolton Scherbenske shut down Pierre in the bottom of the eighth.
Scherbenske went six innings in relief for starter Holden Jackson. Scherbenske allowed two hits, struck out five and gave up no runs, earning the win.
"He looked good, and that was good to see," Messer said. "We got a chance to look at some other arms that we want to get quality innings out of."
Cooper Bowman, Connor King, Walker Poz, Erik Petry, Zach Solano and Sorensen recorded RBI in the first game for Post 22 while Petry, Bowman and Sorensen had multiple hits. Sorensen went 3-4.
In the second game, Post 22 was able to find some offensive firepower that included scoring 10 runs in the top of the seventh inning to blow out Pierre 21-4.
"At the plate in the second game we did a good job of taking advantage of balls out over the plate," Messer said. "We hit them hard and Will Moore did a good job for us."
Moore rebounded from tough start against Spearfish Post 161 Wednesday where he lasted two innings, gave up five earned runs, six hits and struck out three.
Monday he was more effective, lasting four innings and giving up two runs, two hits and striking out three.
"His last outing was rough, he was disappointed but we had a conversation about how today was going to be an opportunity," Messer said. "He took advantage of it."
Post 22 scored a run in the first, second and third before opening up the floodgates in the fourth. The Hardhats scored seven runs to take a 10-0 lead.
Pierre scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the fifth to cut the lead to 10-4. Post 22 responded with a run in the sixth and exploded for 10 runs in the seventh.
Sorensen went 3-5 with 7 RBI and a home run during the second game. Timmy Paris drove in three runs along with Bowman.
Post 22 registered 8 hits in the first game and 14 in the second game. After committing five errors against Post 320 Friday it committed only one in the two games Monday.
Pierre committed two errors in the first game and four in the second game.
The Hardhats will be back in Rapid City Thursday for a 7:30 p.m. game against Watertown Post 17A at Floyd Fitzgerald Stadium.
