Former Rapid City Stevens standout Riley Coates had a big weekend in Hungary, finishing 24th in the 57th annual World Military Cross Country Championships Sunday.

Coates was the second american to finish the race in a field of 108 runners from 20 countries.

His time of 37 minutes, 6 seconds also propelled the Americans to finish fifth in the overall standings.

BH women's bball opens with Montana

The Black Hills State women's basketball team will open its season with an exhibition game against a Division I opponent for only the second time in program history tonight.

The Yellow Jackets will travel to Missoula, Montana for a matchup with the Montana Grizzlies. The Grizzlies went 7-23 last season in the Big Sky conference, while BHSU went 9-17 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

The only other time the Yellow Jackets faced a Division I opponent was the first game of the 2012 season against South Dakota State, which was also its first game as a NCAA team, in a 90-48 loss.

BHSU will open its regular season with Texas A&M-Kingsville Friday at the Young Center at 6 p.m.

R.C. Elite wins Heartland Invitational

The Rapid City Elite girls' soccer club's under-16 team shined at a recent tournament in Kansas City, winning the Heartland Invitational's U16 white division.

Elite beat CRSA 2-0 in the final. For the tournament, the Elite outscored its opponents 13-3.

The team beat club teams from Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri.

GREAT Swimming opens season in Pierre

Nine-year-old Carter Stampler led the way for the GREAT swimming team out of Rapid City at its opening meet at the Pierre Invitational.

Stampler had 78 points and finished 4th in the 50-yard backstroke, 4th in the 100 yard breaststroke, 7th in the 100-yard freestyle, 4th in the 100-yard backstroke and 4th in the 50-yard backstroke.

Phoebe Keller, 7, recorded 45 points; Lucy Woods, 15, had 39 points; Brady Zastoupil, 12, registered 28 points and Charlie Stamper, 13, had 16 points.

Gabby Grabowska-Hoyle, 11, also competed in six events as well as Allison Wood, 12, who also finished in second place in the 100-yard butterfly.
