The Rapid City Post 320 Shooters Junior Legion baseball team advanced in the the State Junior Legion Class A tournament in Watertown with a narrow 4-3 win over Sioux Falls East on Thursday afternoon.
Sioux Falls East wasted no time taking the early lead as it jumped on the Shooters with all three of its runs in the top half of the first inning.
Post 320 cut the deficit to 3-1 with a run in the second as Ian Krump scored on an RBI double by Jamin Wurtz.
Although neither team was able to find an offensive spark over the next four innings, the Shooters took over in their final opportunity at bat.
Post 320 scored three runs in the top of the seventh and held on defensively in the bottom half, holding on to the win.
Carter Stonecipher picked up the win for the Shooters on the mound, allowing three runs on two hits while striking out two batters in six innings.
Wurtz led the way offensively with two hits and one RBI while Russell and Remily finished with one hit and one RBI apiece.
The Shooters (28-16) will play Watertown Post 17 tonight at 6:30 p.m.
Expos fall in second round
The Post 22 Expos fell behind early and couldn’t recover as they dropped a 7-2 decision to Watertown Post 17 in the State Junior Legion Class A tournament in Watertown on Thursday night.
Watertown opened the matchup with a run in the first inning, but were immediately answered by the Expos who tied the game on an Alex Weaver RBI double to right field.
After Watertown added three more runs in the top half of the second inning, the Expos scored its second and final run of the game as Jack Sorenson scored on a Drew Messer groundout to first base.
Watertown put the game out of reach with a pair of runs in the sixth, followed by another insurance run in the seventh.
Sorenson pitched the final five innings of the game for the Expos and allowed four runs on eight hits striking out three.
Weaver led the Expos with two hits and one RBI, while Messer chipped in with one hit and one RBI.
The Expos (37-13) will play either Aberdeen or Brookings in the conslation bracket today at 4 p.m.
