The Spearfish boys' basketball team picked up its first win of the season and initial victory for Erik Skoglund in his return to the program, as the Spartans ran past Chamberlain 73-49 Wednesday night in the East-West Classic in Chamberlain.
Spearfish dominated three of the four quarters played and pulled away in the fourth period to move to 1-4 on the season.
Skoglund, who guided the Spartans to a pair of state tournament berths in his previous stint with the program, returned to Spearfish after spending four seasons in Mitchell.
The Spartans led 18-10 at the end of the first quarter and took a 37-18 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Cubs were able to close the gap in the third, but Spearfish outscored Chamberlain 24-11 in the final eight minutes.
Brady Greger paced the Spartans with 18 points, followed by Jace Engesser with 16 points and Tayven Aga with 13.
Drayton Priebe led Chamberlain, 2-2, with 12 points, followed by Carson Powers with 11 and Grant Gulickson with 10.
Spearfish returns to action Friday at Red Cloud.
SISSETON 69, DOUGLAS 65: The Redmen outscored the Patriots 25-14 in the fourth quarter to get the win at the East-West Classic.
Douglas led 51-44 heading into the fourth quarter.
Dylan Pourier and Dan Hand paced the Patriots with 15 points each, with Russell Morton adding 11 points.
Nate Nielsen led Sisseton, 5-1, with 22 points, followed by Benji Thompson with 20 and Dion Iyarpeya with 16.
Douglas returns to action Tuesday at Hot Springs.
ELK POINT-JEFFERSON 74, CHEYENNE-EAGLE BUTTE 54: The Huskies built a 13-point halftime lead and ran past the Braves in the East-West Classic.
Jared Merkley led Elk Point-Jefferson, 4-2, with 22 points and Adam Grasshoff added 14.
Cheyenne-Eagle Butte, 3-3, was led by Dayson Kohlus's 20 points, followed by Trevis Oakie with 14.
The Braves host Todd County Saturday.
VIBORG-HURLEY 61, FAITH 46: The Cougars used a big fourth quarter to stop the Longhorns in the East-West Classic.
Viborg-Hurley led 41-38 going into the fourth quarter.
Brodee Sherman paced the Cougars, 5-1, with 23 points and Jack Lee added 14 points.
Faith, 2-3, was led by Layton Steele's 18 points, followed by Tyson Selby with 12. The Longhorns host Mott-Regent, N.D. Tuesday.
CHAMBERLAIN 52, DOUGLAS 47: The Patriots came up short in the fourth quarter against the Cubs in the East-West Classic.
Chamberlain used a 22-10 second-quarter advantage and led 29-22 at halftime, before the Patriots cut the lead to five heading into the fourth. Both teams scored 11 points in the final period.
Jordynn Tolliver led Douglas with 20 points, followed by Nique High Hawk with 14. The Patriots, 2-4, are at Spearfish on Jan. 6.
Mady Handel led Chamberlain, 2-2, with 19 points, with Paige Reuer and Hannah Anderson scoring 12 points each.
ETHAN 70, PHILIP 39: The Rustlers dominated the final three quarters to run past the Lady Scotties in the East-West Classic.
Ethan led just 16-14 after one period of play, but outscored Philip 54-25 in the next three to get the win.
Karley Gustafson had a big game for Ethan with 32 points, followed by Cameryn Logan with 11 and Jessica Bartscher with 10.
Cylver Lurz led Philip, 4-3, with 12 points. The Lady Scotties are at New Underwood Jan. 4.

Thunder varsity opens tournament with win over Dickinson
The Rushmore Thunder boys' varsity hockey team opened the Border Battle Holiday Tournament in Dickinson, N.D., with a big 5-2 win over Dickinson.
