The Rapid City Post 320 Stars American Legion baseball team traveled to Spearfish to take on Post 164 in a Thursday evening doubleheader.
In what was a close matchup, the Stars took the first game 5-2, before losing an early lead in the second game as Spearfish was able to edge Post 320 4-3.
In the first game of the day, the Stars got off to a good start as they took a 4-0 lead into the bottom half of the first inning.
They would do so in an unconventional way, starting on a Connor Burgess pop out to center, followed by a single from Seth Brewer. Brewer’s single would be the last time the Stars would get a hit the rest of the way.
After getting the one-out hit, the Stars rounded the bases as Spearfish pitcher Donovan Balsley hit the next three batters, before walking Carter Stonecipher and Dawson Penticoff to put Spearfish at an early disadvantage.
Jamin Wurtz added another run to the Stars early lead when he knocked in a run on a sacrifice fly to right field.
Spearfish answered with a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning as Balsley and Jaxon Rosencranz would reach home on a Taylor Janovy single to left field.
Post 320 added to its lead in the second inning and ultimately put the game out of reach on an error that allowed Burgess to score from second base.
Brady Larson picked up the win for the Stars, allowing five hits and two earned runs, while striking out four batters in seven innings.
Janovy led Spearfish with two hits and two RBI, while Rosencranz chipped in with a pair of hits.
The second game of the doubleheader had a similar start as the Stars took an early lead as they loaded the bases early.
With the bases loaded, Post 320 scored a pair of runs on a Ian Krump sacrifice fly, and a Penticoff RBI single to Center field.
Spearfish answered a couple of innings later as it scored a pair of runs and tied the game on an RBI double to right by Rosencranz.
Post 164 kept its momentum going in the fifth inning, when Balsley scored on a Rosencranz single, and Rosencranz scored on a walk.
The Stars gained some ground in their final opportunity on the offensive end, cutting the deficit to 4-3 on a Brett Beyer RBI double to center.
With two on and two outs, Spearfish held off the late surge to seal the victory.
Rosencranz led the way for Post 164 with two hits and two RBI and Balsley chipped in with two more hits.
Burgess paced the Stars with three hits, while Beyer had two hits and an RBI. Krump and Penticoff added one hit and one RBI apiece for Post 320.
The Stars (26-10) will host Sturgis on Sunday at 1 p.m., while Spearfish (25-13) is back in action on Saturday when it travels to Sturgis for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
