Although the Rapid City Post 320 American Legion baseball team suffered a loss in the first round of the 2016 South Dakota American Legion Class A State tournament, it has managed to bounce back in a big way, picking up a 13-3 win over Sioux Falls East at Harmodon Park in Sioux Falls on Saturday.
The Stars controlled the game from the outset and never ran into any trouble along the way, getting their first four runs in the top half of the fourth inning.
They continued to build on that lead in the fifth inning, scoring a trio of runs to take a 7-0 advantage.
After adding another run in the top of the sixth, the Stars weren’t done yet as their offense erupted for five more runs to put the game away.
Seth Brewer picked up the win for the Stars, going seven innings with nine strikeouts while allowing seven hits and no runs. Along wih a good day on the mound, Brewer also chipped in offensively with three RBIs on two hits.
Hunter Kiewel led Post 320 with three hits and three RBIs, while Cullen Gilbertson chipped in with three hits and two RBIs, and Brett Beyer finished with two hits.
The Stars (34-16) will play Renner Post 307 today at noon MDT with the winner taking on Rapid City Post 22 for the Class A State Championship at 4 p.m.
Renner pulls away from Hardhats late
Post 22 suffered its first loss of the Class A State tournament, dropping a 12-7 decision to Renner Post 307 on Saturday afternoon.
The Hardhats rallied with four runs in the bottom of the seventh for a 7-5 lead, but could not hold on.
Down a run in the fourth, the Hardhats took their first lead on a Carter Deming sacrifice fly and a pair of RBI singles from Justin Kraemer and Sam Haug.
Renner would tie the game on the pair of runs in the fifth, before taking a two run lead with two more runs in the sixth.
The Hardhats wouldn’t be down long, though, as Timmy Paris knocked in a run on a single to center field and Tommy Wahl brought in a pair of runs on a triple to left to give Post 22 a 7-5 lead heading into the eighth.
Renner’s bats got hot at just the right time, regaining the lead with three runs in the eighth inning and four more in the ninth.
Wahl led the way offensively for the Hardhats with three hits and two RBIs. Paris and Deming finished with two hits and one RBI apiece.
Post 22 (48-12) will play the winner of Renner and Post 320 for the Class A state title today at 4 p.m.
