The Rushmore Thunder boys’ varsity hockey team came up short in its bid for an appearance in the state title game, as the Brookings Rangers rolled to an 8-3 win in the semifinals on Saturday in Brookings.

Brookings jumped out to a big 5-0 lead at the end of the first period and never looked back. Both teams scored three times in the second period and there was no scoring in the third.

Alec Ryman got the Thunder on the board just 17 seconds in the second period on an unassisted power-play goal. Tristen Leberknight scored on a power play at the 10:13 mark, assisted by Brooks Mitzel. The third Rushmore goal came by Mitzel shorthanded at 15:48.

The Thunder moved into the semifinals with an 8-5 win over the Watertown Lakers on Friday.

Mark Petereit and Mitzel both scored two goals, while Ryman, Jack Olson, Leberknight and Jack Olson scored goals.

Assists came from Ryman (two), Leberknight (two), Haydon Schmidt, Petereit, Mitzel and Connor Haggerty.

Goalie Jason Walter had 27 shots on goal with 22 saves.

The Thunder will play for third place today at 11 a.m. against Oahe.

RCJ-where is the update to this article? In the article it stated that the Thunder would take on an Oahe team. What was the result of this game? Does the Thunder issue press releases?

It is unfortunate that the Thunder varsity lost to Brookings however they are able to compete on the state level. Just last week the JV team beat Brookings to win the state title & the Peewee A team beat Sioux Falls 2 weeks ago to win their state title. The Thunder are a force at the state level & as we develop our younger kids we will only be stronger. Good job Thunder @ all levels!

Unfortunate the Thunder fell short again. Keep working hard developing the skills and you will be rewarded eventually. Those Brookings, Pierre, and Sioux Falls teams are very hard to compete with.

I'm not a fan of Kentucky or John Calipari but I can give the Wildcats the respect they're due.
