The Chadron Police Department has confirmed the death of Dawes County Veterans’ Service Officer Jeffrey Fankhauser.

A press release issued by the CPD Jan. 30 said Fankhauser, 38, died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound Jan. 28 at approximately 7 p.m. The police department responded to a 911 call just ahead of 7 p.m. in the 400 block of Maple Street and discovered Fankhauser’s body.

An autopsy was scheduled to take place at the Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff Monday morning.

Fankhauser has served as the county’s Veteran Service Officer since June 2005, a position that must be held by a veteran. Fankhauser served in the Air Force from December 1992 to June 1996 and was stationed at F.E. Warren in Cheyenne, Wyo., during his tour of duty.

The Dawes County Attorney’s Office and the Nebraska State Patrol assisted with the investigation.

Jeff was a great man, and a very close friend who had done much for this community. He had a radiant boyish smile that could lighten the room. It is my sincerest prayer for comfort and compassion for his family at this time. We will miss everything about him, but we have a hope in Jesus Christ that we will see him again. If he were here he would proclaim that from the highest hill! Please be in thought and prayer for his boys, and the rest of his family
