HOT SPRINGS - Pleasant temperatures combined with a larger-than-average field added up to a record number of finishers, who turned in faster-than-average times in the Lean Horse Ultra-marathon 100-mile race.
The 100-miler had 83 competitors complete the course from Hot Springs to Hill City and back within the 30 hour time limit. That tops the 66 finishers at last year's race.
Jon Olsen, 34, of Modesto, Calif., found the Lean Horse 100-miler through the Southern Black Hills to his liking, as he turned in the second-fastest time ever recorded. Olsen completed the course in 15 hours, 40 minutes and 33 seconds. Akos Konya, another Californian, turned in a 15:24:00 clocking at last year's event.
This was the second year that the course started and finished at the Mueller Civic Center in Hot Springs.
Jenny Capel, of Reno, Nev., was the top female finisher, and the second person overall to complete the course, finishing in 16:55:30. Capel, who is 35, turned in the fastest time ever recorded for a woman in the race, and hers is the fourth-fastest time ever.
Howard Nippert, a 43-year old runner from Colorado Springs, Colo., obliterated the top time recorded in the 50-miler, completing the course to Pringle and back in six hours, six minutes and 10 seconds. Carrollton, Texas runner Ryan Loehding, who had completed the 100-mile distance in 2006 and 2007 finished second in a time of 7:08:00. Loehding won the 100-miler in 2006 and was runner up last year.
The previous mark at the 50-mile distance was set last year by Sioux Falls runner Greg DeSautel, in 6:53:00.
Forty-nine year old Jennifer Henderson, of Barstow, Calif., turned in the top female time, and was eighth-fastest overall. Henderson completed the course in 8:38:49.
