This holiday season, spend a fun-filled evening with your family at Storybook Island’s 26th annual Christmas Nights of Light event. Every year during the holiday season, Storybook Island in Rapid City transforms its imaginative and educational attractions into a winter wonderland for children and parents alike to enjoy.
“We put up over 20 miles of Christmas lights and all the sets are decorated. It is one of the most beautiful things in Rapid City,” says Jackie Laws, the executive director at Storybook Island, of converting the park into a destination that feels like walking through a snow globe. And with admission set at just $3 per person, the Nights of Light is an inexpensive outing that will give families the opportunity to feel the wonder and spirit of the season.
Parents and children can stroll through the park on foot, or they can ride Storybook Island’s train or carousel for an additional $3 per person. For families worried about the cold temperatures on December nights, snacks and drinks are available to warm you up from the inside out. “We will be offering hot chocolate, as well as cupcakes, eggnog in a souvenir cup and milkshakes in a souvenir cup,” adds Laws.
The Christmas Nights of Light has a dual purpose. In addition to providing a fun and festive outing for children of Rapid City, it also helps support Storybook Island for the following year. “This event is a huge fundraiser to keep admission to Storybook Island free during the summer,” says Laws.

Summer admission to Storybook Island has been free every year since the park was founded in 1959. So if you pay to attend just once (or twice — your little ones may be begging for a return trip!), you can do so knowing that you are making unlimited fun-filled trips to the park during the warmer months possible for countless kiddos.
If you’re looking for an extra-special experience, consider attending the Christmas Nights of Light between Dec. 10 and 19. “During those days, we will have live reindeer in the park,” says Laws. While reindeer (or caribou) once freely roamed the northern United States, they no longer live in the wild in this part of the world. Plus, it will be a treat for little ones who know that if there are reindeer, Santa Claus isn’t far behind!
Storybook Island is just off of Jackson Boulevard on Sheridan Lake Road in Rapid City, South Dakota. The Christmas Nights of Light will take place from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 26-28 and Dec. 3-5, 10-23 and 26-31.
Come out and enjoy the event this holiday season.
