Join us for the STEAM Café this month! Come enjoy a cold beverage and a fascinating talk given by one of SD Mines’ faculty members. This month’s STEAM talk, Hangup Man: A Most Dangerous Job, will be presented by Mark Bowron who serves as an Instructor in the Mining & Engineering Management department.
The Black Hills has a history that is rich in mining. But despite our roots being so closely tied to this industry, most of us rarely think of lives that were affected and even lost during those mining days. SD Mines faculty member, Mark Bowron, a forty-year veteran of the mining industry, will share stories about the “hangup man” a unique position that existed in the 1970’s-80’s at the Climax Mine in Colorado. The hangup man played a vital role in the secondary underground blasting process.
The talk will look at the technical aspects of this blasting technique in underground mining, but also the equally important aspect of the human and emotional toll it would take on the miners. The hangup man job was so dangerous that it is simply no longer allowed under the present Mine Safety & Health Administration rules. There was a saying underground when a hangup man was killed or injured or simply acquired enough seniority to take a job on the surface - “There are no OLD hang-up men.”
Come for the talk, stay for the company. For more information or to add it to your Facebook event calendar visit: https://www.facebook.com/events/371437023510414/.

What’s the STEAM Café?
STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, Hay Camp Brewing Company, and South Dakota Public Broadcasting have teamed up to create STEAM Café, which will be held at 6 p.m. the third Tuesday of each month, at Hay Camp.
Join us for drinks and enjoy a talk by a member of the SD Mines family. Collaborative programs, cutting edge research and historical perspectives on everything from gothic literature to the impact of motherhood are just a few cool things that you’ll learn about at these fun gatherings. The STEAM Café is a place to share new ideas, forge new friendships and grow as a community.
