Led by junior thrower Cory Martens, several Chadron State College track and field athletes had strong performances Saturday at the Stinger Open Meet hosted by Black Hills State in Spearfish.
Martens won the shot put with a mark of 54 feet, 8 ¼ inches, his career best by 29 inches and strengthened his chances of qualifying for the National Indoor Championships in the event.
The junior from Newton, Kansas, also was second in the 35-pound weight throw, but his toss of 57-6 ½ was more than four feet shy of the school record he set in the event in late January.
Martens’ weight throw record of 61-10 ½ is the best this winter in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, which will hold its indoor championships this weekend at Colorado Mines in Golden. He is now third in the shot put standings and is provisionally qualified for nationals in both of the throws.
Another CSC standout in the weight, Jesse Bleidt, as third in the event Saturday at 57-3 ¾. His seasonal best is of 59-1 ½.
Chadron State women also excelled in three field events at the Stinger Open. Erin Graham had a career-best leap of 17-10 ½ while winning the long jump, Michelle Carbajal and Graham were first and second, respectively, in the triple jump with seasonal-best marks and Ashlyn Hanson and Ashton Hallsted took first and second in the weight throw.
Only about 20 Eagles participated in the meet. Athletes from 11 schools competed, and, like CSC, many of them were using it as a tune-up for their conference meets this weekend and did not enter full squads.
Chadron State finished second in the women’s team standings and the men were third. Black Hills State, which entered all of its Yellow Jackets, won both of the team titles.
