In their final action prior to District competition, the Chadron wrestlers traveled to Yoder, Wyo., Saturday for the 2018 Southeast Wyoming Duals, and left winners of three.
The Cardinals went 3-2 at the duals with victories over Bridgeport, Gering, and Hayden, good enough to earn the team fourth place in a field of 18 schools.
Chadron may have lost their dual with Alliance, but the highight of the meet came against the Bulldogs when Jake Lemmon (145) defeated the state’s second ranked wrestler Jorgen Johnson.
Prior to the championship bracket the team was undefeated, with a 77-0 win over Gering, a 48-21 win over Haydon, and a 40-37 defeat of Bridgeport.
The teams’ winning ways would come to an end against a familiar foe in the Alliance Bulldogs in the Cards’ first match of the Championship bracket. The 45-21 loss set up a third-place match against Glenrock that ended in a narrow 39-37 Herders win and dropped Chadron to fourth place at the tournament.
Chadron’s Lemmon and Clark Riesen (170) were undefeated at the tournament, winning their matches in all five duals. Teammate’s Isaiah Beye (195) and Cobie Bila (126) were nearly as good, winning in four of five.
Lemmon, Riesen, Beye, Vince Eleuterio (120), Daniel Wellnitz (132), Ozzy Fernau (160), and Paige Denke (106) all had wins in the Cardinals third place match against Glenrock, which the team lost by just two points.
