The Hay Springs Hawks take the field ahead of their first ever Six Man Semi-final playoff game.

Riverside took control of Friday’s six man semi-final game early, and by the time it was all over in Hay Springs, the Chargers had put up 82 points to the Hawks’ 34.

The Chargers began the game flying, scoring on one of the first plays of the day, but the 80-yard run by Junior Ty Martinsen was brought back by a holding penalty.

It didn’t matter much in the grand scheme of things, as the Chargers would still score during their opening drive on a 10-yard pass from Martinsen to sophomore Tredyn Prososki.

The Hawks would answer the drive with one of their own when junior Trent Reed ran 50 yards on a broken play that nearly had the Hawks losing yards. The point after failed and the resulting 6-8 score was as close as the Hawks would get to the Chargers all afternoon.

Riverside scored 46 points in the first quarter and then 28 in the second for a lead of 74-12 going into the third quarter.

When the two teams emerged from the locker rooms, Hay Springs looked to have more fight left in them and scored early on a touchdown pass to Bryce Running Hawk. Hay Springs managed to keep the Chargers scoreless in the third quarter, and scored, once again on a pass to Running Hawk, with only half a minute left in the quarter.

The third quarter scores, and another in the fourth quarter, a Reed touchdown run, were much too little, much too late. The Chargers would add another touchdown and a safety to end the game and send them to their fourth consecutive six-man championship appearance.

The Chargers came into the game on the heels of a 79-0 defeat of Hyannis in the first round of the playoffs. They’ll face the also undefeated Harvard Cardinals this Thursday in the SMCA State Championship game in Kearney.
