Liam A. Paterson, 81, of Hot Springs, S.D., passed away Dec. 9, 2017, at the Custer Regional Senior Care Center in Custer, S.D.
Liam was born in Denver, Colo. He served in the US Army during the Korean conflict and after his honorary discharge, Liam became a medical photographer at UCLA. He decided to leave there after many years and move east where he met his wife, Christine in 1978, and they married in 1980. They were together 39.5 years before his death.
Liam was a very intelligent, lovable, well-mannered and a “what you see is what you get” kind of a guy as described by a good friend. He worked with the Lakota in Pine Ridge, S.D., sending two to three eighteen-wheel trucks filled with children’s toys, fruit, bicycles, snacks and goodies after Thanksgiving each year for 10 years. With his wife, Christine, he founded the organization, Santa’s Workshop. Liam was Santa to the veterans each Christmas morning at the Lebanon, Penn., VA Medical Center, waking the patients up with his Santa bells, surprising them with coffee and donuts as well as mugs filled with goodies. He also was Santa in many places including nursing homes, toys for tots, or anytime anyone needed a Santa he was glad to help them out. Liam was always there to be of help to people who needed help.
