OPINION - Jerri Baker

To the Editor:

I am writing to shed some light on a topic that has come to our state; uranium mining. I understand enough that it could contaminate our whole aquifer system. I am a mother and a neighbor who is concerned about this and yes, it’s emotional for me.

I am fighting to protect our water from people who don’t seem to mind that eventually the poisons will move. Really? Hey, it’s going to move, what kind of chances are we taking for our present lifestyles. I care about my neighbors, now and in the future.

Go to the library and read the NRC Draft SEIS, here is a quote “Liquid byproduct material generated by the proposed Dewer-Burdock ISR Project will contain chemical and radiological constituents including uranium and radium.” (Powertech, 2011)

As far as the mining goes it’s true, it doesn’t look like much while mining, that’s “the beauty of this modern method” (Powertech ad in 2/26 Star) but what are they leaving for us below?
