Although the Hot Springs gymnasts were unable to take top honors in individual events, their team effort during last Thursday’s Winter Wonderland meet in Vermillion was good enough to win the meet by just half a point.

Winning has become commonplace with the Bison gymnasts, who have now taken top honors in all four of this season’s competitions.

Thursday’s narrow victory came over second place Vermillion who had 123.45 to the Bison’s 123.95. Scoring was close throughout the top six with just five points separating fifth place Wagner-Bon Homme from the victorious Bison.

Wagner-Bon Homme’s Emily Duffek won all-around honors with a score of 34.5. Duffek placed first on the uneven parallel bars (8.15) and floor exercise (9.3), and third on the balance beam (8.35).

Averi Schmeicel of West Central was runner-up all-around. Schmeicel placed first in vault (9) edging Vermillion’s Carter Williams by just .1 point. She also took second in uneven parallel bars (8.1), and fourth on the balance beam (8.4)

Hot Springs’ Tierra Schroeder finished highest all-around of the Bison, placing fourth overall with a score of 32.95. Diamond Miller placed sixth in all-around with 31.55.

Schroeder’s second-place on the balance beam (8.4) and third on the floor (8.75) were the highest individual places from the Bison.

Prior to the Christmas break the Bison girls won in Stanley County with a team score of 124.7, over three points greater than second place Chamberlain.

Hot Springs’ Schroeder was the highest finishing all-around gymnast placing second with a score of 31.75, less than a point fewer than first place finisher Mikayden Weston of Chamberlain.

Senior Josie Haden was the only Bison to take top honors in an individual event, placing first on the balance beam with a score of 7.95

The Bison will attempt to continue their winning ways when they travel to Madison Jan. 12 -13.
