Despite a five-point lead to begin the fourth quarter, the Oelrichs’ girls’ basketball team was defeated by the Sioux County Warriors 50-44 last Thursday in the team’s first action of 2018.

Freshmen Ariana Titus and Jada Rouillard each had 16 points to lead the Tigers in a back and forth game that saw several lead changes.

The Tigers led early in the first period, but it was Sioux County who came out on top, leading 9-6 after one.

The Warrior girls would increase their lead to 19-8 in the second period, but Oelrichs defiantly fought back, finishing the half just one point behind their opponent.

After the break the Oelrichs girls maintained momentum, surpassing Sioux County, at one point leading by as -much as nine points, but eventually settling for a five point, 37-32, lead going into the fourth quarter.

With 4:50 remaining in the fourth-period, the game was tied at 39, but the Warriors would go on a scoring spree, putting up 11 more points in the final minutes of the game, while holding the Tigers to only 5.

Rouillard had six points in the final frame, but was the only Tiger to put up points in the fourth quarter other than Titus who sank a solitary free-throw.

Just two days later on Saturday the team avenged the loss, and secured their first win of the year with a 71-20 trouncing of Takini that brought the team to 3-2 on the season.

After defeating the Tigers on Thursday, the Sioux County Warriors travelled to Edgemont Saturday where they defeated the Moguls’ girls 48-33.

The Tiger boys would get Thursday off as they were awarded a win via forfeit against the Sioux County boys who have cancelled their season due to multiple injuries.

Like the girls, the Oelrichs’ boys would also win big against Takini on Saturday with a final score of 64-34.

The Tiger boys won’t be back in action until Thursday against the 2-5 Crazy Horse Chiefs.

The girls will stay busy this week having played New Underwood Monday night, and participating in the West River Tournament throughout the rest of the week.

At the tournament the Oelrichs girls will face Rapid City Christian in the opening round Tuesday.
