The Northern Hills Ranger District, located in Spearfish, will be offering free-use firewood through Dec. 1 with a valid permit, in the Schoolhouse Gulch area near the South Dakota-Wyoming border.
The District is offering firewood collection from recent forest management activities from tornado clean-up damage. Officials urge the public to use caution and be aware of their surroundings as unforeseen hazards may exist.
The area is located off of Forest Service Road (FSR) 222 (Schoolhouse Gulch) and FSR 221.1E. Signs "Free Firewood Area: Tornado Salvage" are posted along the roads.
A permit is required and can be obtained for the firewood area at any Forest Service District Office in the Black Hills. The amount of free-use firewood granted any user in any one year cannot exceed $20 in value or four cords.
Motorized vehicle use is allowed for collection, up to 300 feet, off Forest Service Roads.
The District reserves the right to close the area as needed due to unforeseen circumstances such as extended moisture that may have impacts on resources. Note: This road is not plowed.
Commercial firewood cutters may not participate in the program.
