STURGIS | Mother Nature denied the area a white Christmas, but made up for the barren plains and hills with a thick coating of snow for the New Year's holiday.

On Jan. 1, Cathy Sandy of Sturgis took three grandchildren for a sledding outing on a small but steep slope along Ball Park Road, near Bear Butte Elementary School in south Sturgis.

The kids, Karlee, Lacey and Dylan Hartley of Rapid City, were among a number of sledders who braved temperatures in the teens while zipping down the hill on their sleds, as crews worked to clear the school parking lot for the reopening of the school year after Christmas break.
