SPEARFISH | Who says winter has to be drab?

The Matthews Art Gallery in Spearfish will host the 39th annual Winter Art Show over the next week, starting Wednesday and lasting through Jan. 25.

A news release from the gallery says the show is open for public viewing during gallery business hours, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday to Saturday. The artist reception and awards ceremony is from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the gallery. Awards will be announced at 6 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public.

“The Winter Art Show is a community tradition and a chance for artists of all media and age groups to be recognized,” Kirk Hauck, gallery and events manager at The Matthews, said in the release. “It is an opportunity to showcase the great talent we have in our area. We encourage people to either stop in the gallery to get an application or go to our website and download the form.”

According to the release, the popular show is open to any artist, amateur or professional, who wishes to participate. Categories are divided by age ranges from pre-K to kindergarten, grade school, high school and adults (ages 19 and up). Registration is not limited to geographical location.

"From beginners to professionals, the show is open to applicants of all ages, levels, and media," the event's website reads.

Cash prizes are awarded to Best of Show, People’s Choice and first place in each age category. The adults category also has cash awards for second and third place.

People who attend the show may cast their votes for their favorite works of art. On the final day of the show, Jan. 25, the People’s Choice award winner will be announced.
