Oktoberfest brings brats, beer and cheer

Polka, beer wiener dogs, and the Tour de Oktoberfest mean it's time for Deadwood to get a little German.

The cobblestone streets of the historic town will once again play host to the Oktoberfest celebration on Oct. 4-6.

The celebrations begin on Thursday, with the annual PolkaFest at Tin Lizzie Gaming Resort featuring music by Just Jim & Tammy, and Julie Lee & The White Rose Band. On Friday, Oktoberfest participants can join the Tour de Oktoberfest with a host of games in various downtown locations and the annual Tour de Oktoberfest Awards Party at the Eagle Bar.

On Saturday, short-legged daschunds run like Olympic sprinters through Deadwood's Main Street race course during the Wiener Dog Races. The winning dogs receive, among other things, a trophy topped with a giant hot dog. The races are open to two classes of dogs: mini and standard. Participants and owners are invited to come in costume; the dog with the best costume walks away a winner.

People will be rolling kegs, racing with trays of full beer glasses, hammering nails and holding beer steins in outstretched arms in a game of endurance at the Beer Barrel Games. Other events include the beer-stein race, keg roll, wiener toss and more.

Teams can call the Deadwood Chamber at 578-1876 to reserve a spot in the games. Teams are encouraged to register early; the games have been full the last two years. Registration is $20 per team, and all team members must be present at registration. Proceeds from the games will be donated to the winning team's charity of choice. For more information, visit
