Submissions

To get your event listed in the Arts Calendar, e-mail the information to features@ rapidcityjournal.com or mail to: Arts Calendar, Rapid City Journal, P.O. Box 450, Rapid City, SD 57709. Include the phone number of a contact person. Submissions will not be taken over the phone. Deadline is noon Monday for publication the next Sunday.

Galleries

· Apex Gallery, Room 201 Classroom Building, South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, 501 E. St. Joseph St., Rapid City - "Preaching to the Birds," a mixed-media installation by Black Hills State University assistant professor of art Ann Porter, is on display through March 2. Porter's art blends her religious upbringing with a love of beauty and her own quirky sense of humor. Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 p.m.-5 p.m. Sundays. · Artforms, 360 Main St., Hill City - Featured artists for January are Mary Jo Marcy of Custer who makes pottery, scarves and purses, along with Neoma Mudlin of Hill City who does feather painting and woodcarving. Hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Call 574-4894.

· A Walk in the Woods Gallery, 506 Mount Rushmore Road, Custer - Paul Horsted, author of "The Black Hills Yesterday & Today, is the featured artist at the gallery this week. The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Call 673-6400, or go to www.WalkWoods.com.

· Central Gallery and Ruth Brennan Gallery, Dahl Arts Center, 713 Seventh St., Rapid City - Now on display in the Ruth Brennan Gallery is "Between Earth & Sky," by Lynn Thorpe and Bright Springman. The exhibit runs through March 17. In the Central Gallery, Black Hills area high school teachers get a chance to show off their talents. The exhibit, which runs from Feb. 2 to March 10, is sponsored by the Rapid City Arts Council. Dahl Arts Center hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. · Custer County Library, Custer - Harlan Krutsch is exhibiting his drawings and paintings this month. Krutsch uses various mediums such as acrylic, scratch art and pencils. Library hours are 11 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; 3 p.m.-7 p.m. Wednesdays and 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. Saturdays. Call 673-8178.

· Sturgis Public Library - The Sturgis Middle School students will be displaying their art during February at the library. An opening reception is planned from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8. Call 720-2293.

· Surroundings Gallery, 21 N. Fourth St., Custer - Featured artist is Tom Eastburn of Hot Springs who works in clay. Eastburn is a full-time clay artist who's challenge it is to create pottery that is aesthetically pleasing, intellecturally stimulating and comfortable to use. · Warrior's Work/Ben West Gallery, 277 Main St., Hill City - The featured artist for February is Lori Jones. She works in acrylics or pen and ink. Jones, a K-12 art teacher in the Hill City School District, encourages students of all ages to pursue their dreams and showcase their talents in local and regional art shows. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.

· West River Gallery, 518 7th St., Rapid City - Currently featuring the Western artwork of Black Hills artist Mick B. Harrison. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. Call 355-9730.

Museums

· The Journey Museum, 222 New York St., Rapid City- The exhibit, "Seeking the Hills: A History Through Black Hills Tourism," continues in the Stanford Adelstein Gallery. Call 394-6923 for more information.

Theater

· Black Hills Community Theatre presents Robert Harling's "Steel Magnolias" through Feb. 18. Call 394-1786.

· Youth & Family Services presents its second annual dinner theatre fundraiser, "Broadway Tonight!" Feb. 16 and 17 at the YFS facility at 120 E. Adams St. All proceeds benefit YFS programs. Black Hills artist Eric Johnson returns to headline this evening of popular Broadway tunes. Doors open at 6 p.m. for a social hour and tours of the YFS facility, followed by a buffet dinner provided by Outback Steakhouse. A silent auction featuring a variety of items will be conducted both evenings. Individual tickets are $50. Call 342-4195.

Nostalgia series

· The Friends of the Devereaux Library at South Dakota School of Mines & Technology are presenting the 13th Annual Nostalgia Film Series. This series features classic films that are shown on consecutive Sunday evenings at Elks Theatre. This year's series, "The Star of Something Big," is comprised of films that were so popular that each of them inspired a sequel. Tickets are available at the door for $5. · Today - "Brief Encounter," with Trevor Howard;

· "Feb. 11 - "Stagecoach," starring John Wayne;

· Feb. 18 - "Funny Girl," starring Barbara Streisand;

· Feb. 25 - "Double Indemnity," starring Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray;

· March 4 - "East of Eden," starring James Dean;

· March 11 - "To Sir, With Love," starring Sidney Poitier;

· March 18 - "Harvey," starring Jimmy Stewart.

Bookmaking class

· The Artspot in Custer will host a bookmaking class from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8. Cost is $35 plus $10 supply fee. Participants will create a one-of-a-kind handmade book for Valentine's Day gift giving. The class is taught by Camille Riner. Call 673-5501 to register.

Grant writing

· Presenters will provide writing tips, answer questions and provide feedback. They'll help you fine tune your goals to give you the best chance of being awarded money to do what you love. Open to arts organizations from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10 and to individual artists from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10. Part of the Starving Artists Buffet of Info at Dahl Arts Center, 713 7th St., Rapid City. Seating is limited. Those interested should call 394-4101 Ext. 200 to reserve a seat.

Singing Valentines

· Meadowlark Productions presents Singing Valentines. Choose your song, and a Meadowlark performer will deliver it along with a rose to your sweetheart on Valentine's Day. Call 391-4396.

Winter art show

· The 28th annual Winter Arts Show at the Spearfish Art Center Matthews Opera House will be Feb. 9-11. The show will open for viewing from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9 and Saturday, Feb. 10. Viewing hours will be noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11. A reception and awards ceremony will be 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
