Colleen Miller walks around outside the Loud American Roadhouse early Saturday, snapping pictures and smiling at all the people readying themselves to walk or run 5 kilometers.

Miller and her family have sponsored the D.A.M 5K Run/Walk for 11 years. The event is named after former Sturgis football standout and NFL player Doug Miller, who was struck and killed by lightning.

“I’m always surprised,” Miller said. “We bring a lot of people into Sturgis.”

For this 11th running, 90 runners and 50 walkers signed up and waited for the starting whistle to blow early Saturday, May 15.

For 2010, the Miller family is passing the benefits on to the rest of the community. Proceeds brought into the Douglas Alan Miller Foundation from the race are going to the Sturgis Brown High School weight room project.

The route looped from the Loud American at Third Street and Main Street, along Ballpark Road, David Drive, Sunset Street Pine Street and Douglas Street before returning to the same starting position.

“Ballpark is a killer hill,” runner April Johnson said.

Johnson’s jog was made more difficult because she was pushing two young children in a stroller for the entire length, about 3 miles.

“It’s definitely harder,” Johnson said.

John Bintliff of Hill City crossed the line first overall with a time of 17:51. Bintliff runs middle distance races for the Dakota State Trojans track team.

“The conditions are perfect,” Bintliff said before the race. “It’s nice and cool with no wind.”

After posting his time—well shy of the race record of 16:34—Bintliff’s tune was not much different.

“I’m a little tired,” he said. “I haven’t run in three weeks.”

Fifteen runners crossed the line in less than 24 minutes. The runners and walkers ranged in ages

almost as much as they did in finish times.

“There was a teeny tiny baby that paid,” Trisha Nelson said. “Seventy-seven is our oldest runner.”

Nelson was just one member of the extended Miller family helping with the run/walk.

Along with sister-in-law Tammy Jones, Nelson operated the registration desk.

“This is an extended family deal,” Jones said. “It’s all friends and family working here.”
