Nearly $817,000 in federal grants has been awarded to develop and expand business opportunities in Native American communities in South Dakota.

The largest grant of $548,468 goes to United Sioux Tribes Development Corporation in Pierre. It will be used to provide technical assistance to the state's nine tribal reservation areas.

Four other grants of $20,000 to nearly $100,000 each go to organizations in Eagle Butte, Fort Thompson, Kyle and Porcupine.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture provided $3.4 million in grants to 27 communities nationwide through its Rural Business Enterprise Grant program.
