Northwest Nebraska had an interesting high school track and field season this spring. The season had its ups and its downs, but had more pluses than minuses when everything is considered, it seems.
Sophomore Addisyn Gruver added more than a foot to her long jump best during the past season and now owns the Chadron Cardinals’ record of 18 feet, 11 inches. She also improved her school records in both the 100- and 200-yard dashes this spring.
This relay team set both the Chadron High and area 4x100 records while winning the 4x100 race in 50.03 seconds at the Class B-6 District Meet in Alliance this spring. The runners, from left, are Rylan Barry, Brooklynn Hoffman, Alex Rasmussen and Addisyn Gruver.
Shown winning a race this season, Hemingford junior Austin Benda now has the fifth fastest times among Northwest Nebraska high school distance runners in both the 1600 (4:32.05) and 3200 (9:51.5).
Hay Springs senior Parker Wellnitz closed out his high school track career by placing third in the Class D 3200 meters at the State Meet in Omaha in 10:09.64, his career-best by 20 seconds.
