PIERRE | A state employee who is the subject of an investigation into the South Dakota secretary of state's office has resigned.
Secretary of State Jason Gant announced Friday that Pat Powers has resigned to spend more time with his children and pursue business opportunities in the private sector.
Republican State Sen. Stan Adelstein of Rapid City requested an investigation last month into allegations that Powers had been running a private business that sold campaign materials while he was working in the secretary of state's office. The office is responsible for overseeing elections in South Dakota.
Attorney General Marty Jackley has said the matter is under review.
In his statement announcing Powers' resignation, Gant thanked Powers for helping to modernize the secretary of state's office and making it more transparent.
