A store clerk who reported a Sunday night robbery has been arrested on suspicion of committing the crime.
According to a press release from the Pennington County Sheriff's Office, Justin Burns, 21, of Rapid City, was working at the Johnson Siding Store at about 9 p.m. Sunday when he reported a robbery.
When deputies arrived, they found Burns with a bump on his head and a story that one or two men, possibly armed, had entered the store and struck him on the head.
"Upon further investigation," the release said, "it was determined that the clerk's head wound was self-inflicted, there were no other suspects, and the money that was reportedly stolen was recovered in close proximity to the store."
Deputies arrested Burns on suspicion of grand theft and making a false report.
