STURGIS - Robert Cleveland “Bob” Smiley was born May 4, 1925, in Belle Fourche, the third son of Artemas and Hilda (Satter) Smiley. His mother died of diphtheria when Bob was 16 months old, and Harry and Gertie (Simons) White, Red Owl, lovingly raised him as their foster son. Bob attended his first seven years of grade school at Red Owl and his final year at Marcus. He attended three years at Stoneville High School until it closed in 1941. Growing up, Bob enjoyed coon hunting, trapping, breaking and riding horses, ice skating, and playing baseball. Bob worked with Harry on the ranch raising sheep and cattle and bought the ranch after Harry died. He also worked for Kemp Gentry and other neighbors as a young adult.
Bob married Ardis Stage on June 28, 1956, at Union Center, and the couple made their home on the ranch near Red Owl. Bob owned a truck and permit with Harold Cobb and hauled livestock and feed for eight years. Bob and Ardis started raising Rambouillet sheep and Hereford cattle, enjoying the challenges and joys of ranching in Meade County. Four sons and two daughters were born to the couple. They lived on the ranch until September 2012 when they moved to Sturgis. In January 2014, Bob moved to the Sturgis Regional Nursing Home where he passed away peacefully to be with the Lord on August 11, 2017, at the age of 92.
Bob always had a love for outdoor activities including shooting, hunting, and fishing. He pitched for the Marcus baseball team. He also enjoyed reloading, horseshoes, cribbage, reading, and visiting with friends and neighbors. Bob was a hardworking, honest, humble, wise, and patient man. He is remembered as a good husband, father, and grandfather, a man who taught by example. He always took time from his busy life to spend quality time with family and found enjoyment in encouraging and supporting them. Bob was well liked and respected in the Red Owl area and will be dearly missed by all.
Blessed and grateful for Bob’s life are his wife of 61 years, Ardis of Sturgis; five children, Rob (Kim) Smiley of Red Owl, Rick Smiley, Donna (Loren) Bruse, and Russell (Melinda) Smiley all of Sturgis, and Diana (Luke) Lopez of Mobridge; and eight grandchildren, Sierra Bruse, Kristin Smiley, Blake Smiley, Shelbi Bruse, Caden (Jori) Smiley, Sarah Lopez, Sophia Lopez, and Tanner Smiley.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; his foster parents; an infant son, Cody Stage Smiley; two brothers John “Jack” Smiley and Richard “Dick” Smiley; infant sister, Clara Mae Smiley; and foster sisters Sis (White) Kovarik and Vivian (White) Murphy.
