STURGIS | The fleet of vehicles available for district activity use will soon increase by one thanks to the generosity of the Sturgis Booster Club.

The Booster Club will pay between $38,000-$42,000 toward the purchase of a new 15-passenger Ford van, with the school district contributing $20,000. The 2013 vehicle will be in lieu of a suburban that the district was scheduled to purchase this year.

“Our Booster Club has taken the bull by the horns,” said Activities Director Mike Paris. “They saw a need and acted.” According to Paris, when there are more students than two suburbans can carry, the district uses a school bus for transportation. “This new vehicle will be a cost savings,” he said.

It was pointed out a commercial drivers license is not needed but other training will be required of all drivers of the new vehicle.

By hiring the architectural firm Williams and Associates at its Tuesday meeting, the school board has decided the time is right to begin remodeling the east wing of the second floor of the Williams Administrative Building to accommodate the fifth grade from Sturgis Elementary. “Because of our enrollment, we will need to use this area beginning with the 2014-15 school year,” said Superintendent Don Kirkegaard.
