A Rapid City man charged with attempting to kill another man with his car pleaded guilty Tuesday to a lesser offense of aggravated assault.
Lantz Apple, 20, admitted running into Dayton Mesteth, then 17, with his car and breaking Mesteth’s leg during an October incident in Pennington County. Apple then came back around and tried to hit the victim again, State’s Attorney Mark Vargo said.
It’s not clear what led to the incident and what relationship Apple had with Mesteth, who is now 18.
Apple is facing up to 15 years in prison at his sentencing July 17 before Circuit Judge Robert Gusinsky. His original charge of attempted murder, another charge of aggravated assault and other pending cases will be dismissed as part of his plea deal with prosecutors. He is detained at the county jail till his next hearing.
