Black Hawk Hay Bales

A firefighter works Friday to extinguish a hay bale fire in Black Hawk.

A blaze that torched approximately 70 hay bales was extinguished Friday morning on Norman Avenue in Black Hawk.

According to Pennington County Fire Services, the fire was reported at 7:22 a.m. Upon arrival, firefighters with the Black Hawk Fire Department and other agencies began working with local ranchers to keep the blaze confined to about an acre and a half, which saved other bales and limited the amount of smoke that drifted over Interstate 90, according to the news release.

No injuries were reported in the fire.

In addition to the Black Hawk Fire Department, Piedmont Fire and Ambulance Service, North Haines Volunteer Fire Department, Box Elder Volunteer Fire Department, South Dakota Wildland Fire, Pennington County 911 and the Meade County Sheriff’s Office responded to the fire.
