A rapidly spreading wildfire in Custer State Park is threatening wildlife in the park.

The South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks Department is asking for hay donations to help feed the bison at Custer State Park as a wildfire continues to burn thousands of acres of grassland.

"Due to #LegionLakeFire there is a need for hay for the buffalo herd throughout the winter," GF&P said in a tweet Wednesday afternoon. "Please message @CusterStatePark with your information as phone lines are currently not available."

The rapidly spreading fire threatened wildlife in the park Tuesday night, and staff spent Wednesday checking on animals along Wildlife Loop Road.

Custer State Park said in a tweet that resource managers were evaluating the status of all wildlife but were not aware of any casualties.

The park is home to a herd of around 1,000 bison, which designated park staff manage, and many other animals such as elk, deer, antelope, prairie dogs and burros.
