A 21-year-old man pleaded not guilty Thursday in a fatal shooting in northeastern Rapid City last month.

Maricelo Garcia is charged in Pennington County with first-degree murder in the killing of fellow Rapid City man 20-year-old Clinton Farlee on Oct. 4. The crime is punishable by death or life in prison without the possibility of parole.

According to police reports, Garcia shot Farlee after the men got into an argument at Farlee’s home in the 600 block of East Boulevard North. Farlee was reportedly struck once in the chest and died at the hospital that evening.

Two days earlier, investigators said, Garcia had also shown up at Farlee’s home, argued with Farlee, then threatened to come back, rob and shoot him.

Both times, Garcia had allegedly been accompanied by 19-year-old Cierra Walks. Rapid City police said they left the shooting scene in an SUV driven by Walks and were found two days later, “hiding in the rugged terrain” of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

Walks, of Rapid City, is charged with being an accessory to a crime, which carries a prison sentence of up to five years. She pleaded not guilty on Tuesday before 7th Circuit Judge Robert Gusinsky and is scheduled to return to court Nov. 21.

Walks and Garcia are detained at the county jail, Walks in lieu of a $100,000 bail and Garcia without bond.

Garcia, represented by Matt Rappold and Matt Laidlaw of the county Public Defender’s Office, is due back before 7th Circuit Judge Jane Wipf Pfeifle on Nov. 30.

Farlee’s death is the latest of seven homicides in Rapid City this year, according to law enforcement.
