Wes Selby poses with the Arctic Cat SVX450, a "snow bike" retro-fitted with wheels to drive across the pavement at the Sturgis bike rally.

Now rolling through the streets of Sturgis: A bike that can't be seen anywhere else — summer or winter.

It's a called the Arctic Cat SVX450, and it looks like a cross between a snowmobile and bike with roller blades.

"We call it a snow bike," said Wes Selby, a representative of Arctic Cat.

Like a snowmobile, open tundra and snowy slopes are the preferred terrain for the SVX450. The dirt bike frame sits atop a set of treads in back and a broad ski in front. The bike on display in Sturgis, the first production model of its kind, has had its ski retrofitted with a pair of small wheels so it can drive across the blacktop, where it handles just as well as any motorcycle, Selby said.

With a 450cc, four-stroke engine, it can hit about 60 mph, and can do donuts in the parking lot.

The snow bike is gaining popularity in Colorado and Utah, Selby said. In bringing it to Sturgis, the hope is that the idea will catch on in the Black Hills.
