A parenting lecture from two nationally renowned speakers on child management will speak today at Western Dakota Tech.
Scott Poland, coordinator of the suicide prevention unit of the Los Angeles Unified School District, and Richard Lieberman, faculty member at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, will lead a community forum at the tech school's event center at 800 Mickelson Drive. Rapid City Area Schools is sponsoring the event.
A news release from the school district notes that parenting in "today's challenging times" can mean younger children are exposed to "extraordinary stressors," such as social media, school violence, cyber-bullying, substance abuse, sexual identity and exposure to traumatic events.
Poland and Lieberman, the release continues, will "empower parents" by directly addressing difficult questions over internet use, talking to teens and children, and suicide warning signs.
Information from the World Health Organization on safeguarding children, including factors and tips, are on the docket to be shared and discussed.
