Scenes from a September 2018 pine-cone-picking operation in the southern Black Hills. The cones, which are picked every two to seven years depending on conditions, are sent to a nursery in Nebraska where the seeds are extracted and grown into seedlings. The seedlings are then planted in the 130-square mile area of the southern Black Hills that was burned by the Jasper Fire in 2000. (Photos by Ryan Hermens/Rapid City Journal)
