Pine Ridge primary elections today


A total of 68 names will appear on the ballot for today’s primary election for the offices of president, vice president, and various seats on the Oglala Sioux Tribal Council in the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Below is a list of the candidates and polling places in each of the nine districts.

The general election will be on Nov. 8.

Incumbent President John Yellow Bird Steele faces challenges from Bruce Whalen and Troy “Scott” Wheston. Incumbent Vice President Thomas Poor Bear is also challenged by James “Toby” Big Boy, Darla Black, and Henny Whalen.

Former Oglala Sioux Tribal Police Chief Eugenio White Hawk — who reportedly resigned in August — is also seeking office as representative of the Wounded Knee district. White Hawk could not be reached for comment.

Below is a list of the certified candidates and polling places in each of the nine districts, according to the Oglala Sioux Tribal Election Commission:


  • Candidates :  Blaine Little Thunder (incumbent), Ruth Brown-Wright, Jim Meeks, Marilyn Charging Crow (incumbent), Leroy J. Wilcox Sr., Mavis Wilcox and Wayne Randall.
  • Polling Places: Crazy Horse School.


  • Candidates: Craig L. Dillon (incumbent), Larry Livermont, Cora White Horse, Charles L. Cummings and Donn Fire Thunder (incumbent).
  • Polling Places: Lacreek District Services Center.


  • Candidates: Austin Watkins Sr (incumbent), Stanley Little Whiteman, Mona Vocu, Chauncey Wilson (incumbent) and Beau Little Whiteman.
  • Polling places: Kyle District Service Center, Mediator Church, St. Henry’s Church.


  • Candidates: Jason “Jake” Little, Jackson Ten Fingers, Darlis Morrison Crow, Valentina Merdanian, Valerie Janis, Stephanie Leasure, Brenda Youngman, Paul Forney, Barbara Dull Knife, Floyd Brings Plenty (incumbent) and Paul Little.
  • Polling Places: Brother Rene Hall (Our Lady of the Sioux Catholic Church), Red Shirt Old School Gym.


  • Candidates:  Ron Duke (incumbent), Lydia Bear Killer, Lawrence Swalley, Joseph Reddest and James Cross (incumbent).
  • Polling Places: American Horse School.


  • Candidates:  Gerald Big Crow, Ella “John” Carlow (incumbent), Pamela Clifford, Robin Tapio, Sesalie Red Owl, George Wilson, Irving Provost, Richard “Sheech” Greenwald (incumbent), Lyle Jack and Ann Mousseau.
  • Polling Places: Billy Mills Hall


  • Candidates: David Pourier (incumbent), Philip Good Crow, Patrick Ross (incumbent), Dawn Black Bull, James Twiss and Randy Lays Bad.
  • Polling Places: Our Lady of Lourdes (Parish Hall), Baptist Church Sharps Corner.


  • Candidates:  Justes Wilson Richards, Jacqueline Siers (incumbent), Joni Tobacco, Jane Little Hawk-Rodriquez, Denver American Horse, Sandy Two Lance and Sonia Little Hawk-Weston (incumbent).
  • Polling Places: Batesland College Center, Wakpamni District Service Center, Wakpamni Lake Blue Building, Advent Church (Calico), #4 Payabaya Seventh Day Adventist Mission, Slim Buttes/Red Cloud Community Blue Building.


  • Candidates: Irene Jumping Eagle, Eugenio White Hawk, Collins “CJ” Clifford (incumbent), Garfield Apple and Lisa Jumping Eagle - DeLeon.
  • Polling Places: Wounded Knee District Service Center, Wounded Knee Church of God.
