RAPID CITY | John M. Young, 64, died, at home Monday, Oct. 1, 2018, after a four-month battle against cancer.
John was born Aug. 13, 1954, to Fred and Mabel Young in Mountain Home, ID.
He served in the U.S. Navy and later became a Sgt. in the U.S. Army being honorably discharged in 1984.
Both John and his father were professional chefs and restaurant owners. He was a skilled boxer and basketball player. He enjoyed building street rods and riding horses and motorcycles.
On Sept. 9, 1999, John moved to Rapid City, and on Nov. 23, 1999, he married Jo Stork. John worked eight years at Tally’s Diner, and at the West Side Family Thrift Center, Boyd’s, and the Dollar Tree for three years each.
John is survived by his wife Jo; and many relatives and friends across the country, including brothers, Clarence, Oregon, and Joseph, Utah; nephew, J.W., Wyoming; and three cats.

A memorial service, with military honors provided by Rapid City VFW Post 1273, will be 2:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
