A Rapid City man died Tuesday morning in a road construction accident on Dawkins Road east of Rapid City.
Robert Gilland, 68, was operating a 12-ton asphalt paver when it rolled and then landed on him at about 11:40 a.m., according to the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office. He died instantly.
Captain Marty Graves said the paver was operating on a rough surface and rolled into a ditch. The accident occurred about one-half mile northeast of East Highway 44, which is near Caputa.
Graves did not know if Gilland was employed by the county or working for a private contractor.
A portion of Dawkins Road is slated for an asphalt concrete overlay this summer, according to the Pennington County Highway Department’s website.
Graves said the investigation into Gilland’s death is ongoing.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol, Pennington County Search and Rescue, Rapid City Fire Department and Rapid Valley Volunteer Fire Department responded to the accident.
