Rapid City residents remembered the area’s devastating 1972 flood with events throughout the day Saturday.
The flood, which occurred the evening of June 9, 1972, killed 238 people and destroyed homes and other buildings. The flood shaped the development of Rapid City as golf courses, parks and greenways were created on housing areas destroyed in the flood.

Saturday, area residents attended a walk through Rapid City’s greenway where they remembered events from the night of the flood. Residents also attended a flood memorial powwow at the Mother Butler Center and an evening convocation ceremony at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.
