RAPID CITY | Marlys Ann Drew, 84, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2017, at the Hospice House.
Marlys was born in 1933 at the Chamberlain Hospital to Lewis and Anna Leiferman. She grew up on the family farm about five miles from Chamberlain.
Marlys was a 15-year-old beauty and George an 18-year-old with matinee idol good looks when they met. Marlys moved from the farm to attend Chamberlain High School and the two began dating. They married in the Rectory of the Chamberlain Catholic Church.
George was serving in Alaska during the Korean War when their first son, Michael, was born in 1951. One year later, Marlys gave birth to twin boys in Rapid City. Joseph, the oldest twin, died shortly after birth and Robert, the surviving twin, was welcomed into their family. Darla was born in 1955 in Mitchell. Darren was born in Rapid City in 1960.
Marlys is survived by her husband of 66 years, Col. (ret.) George F. Drew; son, Mike and Renee (Christensen) Drew of Carver, MN, and their children, Michael and Allison (Bubb) Drew, great-grandson Michael Drew, and daughter Sarah Drew; son, Robert and Lizabeth (Shaw) Drew of Rapid City, and their children, Natalie, William and Claire (Gates) Drew and Joseph Drew; daughter, Darla Drew Lerdal and Don Lerdal of Rapid City, and their children, Drew Lerdal and Amanda Scott Lerdal, Mattie (Lerdal) and Brent Loney, and great-grandsons, Jax and Beck Loney; son, Darren and Debbie (Wittenberg) Drew of Woodbury, MN, and their children Alexandra and Zachary. Marlys is survived by her brother, Dwayne, and his wife, Lucille, of Chamberlain. She is also survived by the many “kids” who shared the Drew residence over the years.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 13, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home, with Rev. Herb B. Cleveland officiating. Marlys’s remains will be interred at Black Hills National Cemetery.
A memorial has been established to the American Red Cross.
