NEW YORK CITY | Marshall “Eric” Johnson passed away with good friends at his side on Feb. 14, 2019, at Calvary Hospital in New York City.
Eric was born on Dec. 21, 1951, in Huron, South Dakota, to Marshall and Alta (Kintigh) Johnson.
Eric grew up in Miller and graduated from Miller High School in 1970. He then went on to the University of South Dakota where he studied theater and music. He spent many summers at the Black Hills Playhouse. His first big role at the age of 19 was as Tevye in “Fiddler on the Roof." He gained a lot of experience during his years at BHPH playing many different roles. Throughout his life his passion was performing, directing, and teaching. He was a mentor and inspiration to many from South Dakota to New York and many places in between.
Eric will be greatly missed by his family and dear friends. He is survived by his sister, Janet (Randy) Albers of Rapid City; niece, Lisa (Lance) Anderson of Yankton; nephews Cory Albers, Bill Albers, and Andrew (Holly) Albers, all of Rapid City; great-nephews, Austin (Meghan) Anderson and Aksel Albers; and great-nieces, Tayler Albers and Gracie Albers.

Eric was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Regina Mannix; and great-niece, Jessi Anderson.
A memorial service will be held at a date yet to be determined.
The family requests that memorial donations be directed to Black Hills Playhouse Summer Camps, PO Box 2513, Rapid City, SD 57709-2513 (to help students with tuition cost).
