FAULKTON | Dorothy Kalkman, 85, passed away Sunday, June 22, 2014, at Mother Joseph’s Manor in Aberdeen, surrounded by her family.

Dorothy Mary Muellenberg was born July 26, 1928, in Zell to Frank and Magdalene (Eschenbaum) Muellenberg. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Zell and Redfield High School. Following graduation Dorothy worked in Redfield at Dr. Walston’s Dental office and the Redfield Drug Store.

On March 26, 1951, Dorothy was united in marriage to Clarence Kalkman in Redfield. At the time, Clarence was in the military and they made their home for a short time in Fairbanks, Alaska, where their first child, Steve was born. Following Clarence’s military service they moved to the family farm near Faulkton, where they were blessed with their three daughters, JoEllen, Jane, and Shirley. Dorothy remained at home to help with the farm and help raise her children. In 1991, Clarence retired and they moved into Faulkton. For 10 years they enjoyed spending their winters in Mesa, AZ.

Throughout the years, Dorothy has been actively involved with St. Thomas Catholic Church where she was a member. She served on the altar society, the Catholic Daughters Association, and the prayer and share group. Dorothy was also a member of the Lakeside Country Club and the American Legion Auxiliary. In her free time Dorothy enjoyed gardening, golfing, reading, crocheting, sewing, quilting, doing crafts, bowling, dancing and traveling.

Grateful for having shared in her life are her children: Steve (Marty) Kalkman of Rapid City, JoEllen Palmer of Aberdeen, and Jane (Ron) Rhebb of Norfolk, NE; her brother, Douglas (Mary) Muellenberg of Columbus, IN; her grandchildren: Kristina White, Stephanie Stenstadvolden, Ryan, Dana and Dustin Palmer, Keith and Nathan Rhebb and Rachel Rude; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence; daughter, Shirley; granddaughter, Kaylunn; brother, Clarence; and sister, Angela.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. CDT, with 7 p.m. prayer services Thursday, June 26, at St. Thomas Catholic Church.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 27, at the church, with Fr. Joji Itukulapati officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. 

Memorials will be directed to a charity of the family’s choice.
